Sean McKenzie
Royal College 2024

Sean grew up in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island and returned to Vancouver following the completion of his medical degree at the University of Alberta and Core Internal Medicine residency at the University of Calgary. He is currently in the final year of his subspecialty training and look forward to furthering his clinical development under the guidance of exceptional faculty and mentors.

 

Peter Song (Sung Hoon)

Royal College 2025

Peter grew up in South Korea and moved to Ontario during high school. He completed his undergraduate degree at McMaster University, then went to medical school at the University of Toronto. Peter moved to Vancouver 3 years ago for his internal medicine residency. Peter is happily married to his wife who I met in Toronto. In his free time, he enjoys watching seals and birds. 

 

Claire Morris
Royal College 2025

Claire studied medicine in London, UK at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry followed by foundation training and core medical training in the south of England. She completed by Internal Medicine training at the University of Toronto. Claire is drawn to Palliative Care as she loves getting to know patients better and helping them understand and navigate around approaching the end of life. She spends most of her free time outside of work playing with her hilarious and feisty toddler but enjoys cooking and audiobooks when possible.

 

 

Megan Woolner
Cat 1 Starting 2025

Megan is excited to join the Division of Palliative Care as a fellow. She has a background in family medicine and completed an addiction medicine fellowship. Her practice has primarily been based in Victoria, with a focus on addiction medicine. Beyond her clinical work, she has a strong interest in mindfulness and enjoys facilitating mindfulness-based groups for patients and providers. When not working, you can find her experimenting with ceramics or hiking the trails with her husband and their three-year-old golden retriever, Archie.

 

Jeeyoun (Andrew) Jeong
Cat 1 Starting 2025

Andrew was raised in the lower mainland and completed family medicine residency at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver. In his free time, he enjoys foodspotting, board games, and trying different sports with friends (most recently tennis).  

 

Helena Kita
Cat 1 Starting 2025

Originally completing medical school in Toronto, Helena came to Nanaimo to complete her family practice residency this year. She is doing her enhanced skills year primarily on Vancouver Island, with a goal of working there in the end. She has interests in outreach care, and anti-oppressive approaches to practice. In her free time, she loves to paint, camp, and swim in the ocean, and am building a canoe!

 

Qing Ning (Randi) Mao
Cat 1 Starting 2025

Randi is a PGY3 palliative care resident who completed both medical school and Family Medicine residency at McMaster University. She is very excited to move provinces and complete her Enhanced Skills in Palliative Care training here at the University of British Columbia. She is passionate about medical education, mentorship, and resident wellness. Outside of work, Randi enjoys travelling, trying new food spots, golfing, skiing, watching basketball, and going to music festivals!

 

Averil Ivsins
Cat 1 Starting 2025

Averil has been practicing Emergency Medicine for 12 years, and is excited to explore and start her career in Palliative Care. She lives on the North Shore, and loves horseback riding, weightlifting and spending time with her dog. Oh and also her family- her very supportive husband Andrew and amazing superstar daughter who is about to launch into grade 12 and then the world!

 

Jihyun Sung
Cat 1 Starting 2025

Jihyun grew up in South Korea and Southern Ontario, and completed her rural family medicine residency at University of Calgary. Growing up with animals and farms, she loves fostering dogs and cats from the local shelter as a busy resident. She also enjoys trying new restaurants, skiing, playing music, and horseback riding.

 

Kimberly Duffels
Cat 1 Starting 2025

Kimberly was born and raised in the lower mainland. She completed medical school with UBC and family medicine residency with Macmaster. She has been locuming on Vancouver Island for the last 2 years and is excited to be back home with her family and friends, pursuing an area of medicine that she finds rewarding.

Faraz Sethna
Cat 2 Starting 2025

Dr. Faraz Sethna earned his medical degree at the Medical University of the Americas and completed his family medicine residency at East Carolina University in North Carolina. He practiced family medicine in Ontario for nine years, with a special interest in public health and palliative care. During this time, he also gained meaningful experience working as a member of an Indigenous healthcare team.

Originally from North Vancouver, Dr. Sethna is excited to return to his hometown to be closer to family. He has relocated with his wife and three children and is thrilled to be joining the Enhanced Skills Program in Palliative Care.

Rachel Zhao
Cat 2 Starting 2025

Rachel is a UBC medical school graduate and recently completed her Family Medicine residency in the Abbotsford program, where she became interested in palliative care through meaningful experiences supporting patients and families. She will start a 3-month Enhanced Skills training in Palliative Care to further develop her skills in this field.

Malak Ghaddar
Palliative Nephrology Fellow

Malak completed her training in Nephrology at the AUBMC in Lebanon, then additional clinical and research training in nephrology at UBC, where she is currently completing a Master’s degree in Health Sciences. Her interest in palliative care grew from her own experience with cancer- a journey that continues to shape her commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care. Malak finds solace in reading and music with deep appreciation for poetry.
