Dr Margaret Cottle- Recipient of the ‘Medical Undergrad Society Dr. William A. Webber Teaching Award’

The Medical Undergrad Society Dr. William Webber Award is specifically awarded to a UBC Faculty of Medicine member whose involvement in medical student life illustrates an ongoing commitment to the well-being of the medical student community as exemplified by Dr. William Webber. This involves areas such as academic/clinical instruction, student advising and mentorship, involvement in student leadership, sports/recreational events, promoting/facilitating social awareness, and research. This year’s recipient is Dr Margaret Cottle.

Dr. Margaret Cottle is a palliative care physician in Greater Vancouver.  She and her husband, Robin, and ophthalmologist, met and married at UBC medical school and graduated together in 1978.  Dr. Cottle is a clinical assistant professor at UBC and for over 20 years she has enthusiastically welcomed new colleagues into the profession of medicine through her teaching in clinical skills and palliative care.   The Cottles continue to host the original “special interest” mentor group—the Jazz Mentor Group—which they started more than 15 years ago.  They sponsor the MedPlay every year, and Dr. Cottle exhibits one of her calligraphy pieces in the UBC art show each spring.  The Cottles are completing their 25th year of sponsoring the student chapter of the Christian Medical and Dental Society of Canada, hosting students in their home every Thursday for dinner and discussions.
