Best piece of advice for new physicians: occasionally you may run into a case that is just too hard for you emotionally. I think that usually happens if it is simply too close to home or too close to your personal situation. You may also be under too many other stressors and you just can’t cope with this particular case at this time. You need to reach out to a colleague, briefly explain and asked to transfer the case. This is not a failure or inadequacy – it is protecting yourself for the long game.( My example when I was a family medicine resident was being assigned a three-year-old who had a new diagnosis of leukaemia – I went into the room and he looked exactly like my three-year-old son. I told the family I was in the wrong room, and I asked the senior resident to excuse me from that case.)
