The Division of Palliative Care (DOPC) Leadership Summit 2024 invites you to be a part of a transformative journey in elevating end-of-life care. About the Speakers:

 Keynote: Dr. Sunita Puri (International Palliative Guest Speaker)

 Dr. Sunita Puri is the author of That Good Night: Life and Medicine in the Eleventh Hour, a critically acclaimed literary memoir examining her   journey to the practice of palliative medicine, and her quest to help patients and families redefine what it means to live and die well in the face   of serious illness. A graduate of Yale University and a Rhodes Scholar, she completed medical school and residency training in internal   medicine at UCSF, and completed fellowship training in hospice and palliative medicine at Stanford University. She is the Program Director for the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship at the  UMass Chan School of Medicine, where she is an associate professor of medicine. She has received writing fellowships from Yaddo, the MacDowell Colony, Mesa Refuge, and Hedgebrook, and served as guest nonfiction faculty for the University of California Riverside MFA Program in Creative Writing. The recipient of a Rhodes Scholarship, her writing has appeared in the New Yorker, New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Slate, and the Journal of the American Medical Association. She and her work have been featured in the Atlantic, NPR, People Magazine, PBS/Amanpour Show, The Guardian, the BBC, Boston Public Radio, the Asian Age, Spirituality and Health, and India Today, among other places.


Dr. Charlie Chen, (he/him), MD, MEd, CCFP(PC), FCFP, is a palliative care consultant and the Medical Lead for Advance Care Planning and Goals of Care in Calgary Zone, and is a Clinical Associate Professor at University of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine, Division of Palliative Medicine, Departments of Oncology and Family Medicine. He finished a 4-year term as the Medical Director of PEOLC in Calgary Zone in August 2023. Passionate about medical education, he completed a Masters of Education degree in Post-Secondary Curriculum and Instruction in 2014. He has also served as the program director for palliative medicine residency programs at UBC. Charlie is delighted to be a Physician Advisor: Wellness, Diversity, and Development for Alberta Health Services Medical Affairs.Charlie is Chair and founding member of the Wellness Committee for the Canadian Society of Palliative Care Physicians, for which he has also served as a Director of the Board. He was also a steering committee member of MDs4Wellness in Fraser Health, BC, where he worked for 2 decades before moving to Calgary. Charlie believes that a healthy, diverse, and engaged physician workforce and a resilient organization are crucial for the delivery of high-value, effective, patient-centred healthcare.

Dr. Anita Palepu, MD, MPH, FRCPC, MACP, FCAHS is a Professor and Eric W. Hamber Chair, Head of the Department of Medicine, University of British Columbia and the Head, Department of Medicine, Providence Health Care. She is a Scientist with the Centre for Advancing Health and her research area falls under the broad umbrella of urban health research. She is one of the leads for the UBC Department of Medicine’s Data Science and Health research cluster. Dr. Palepu is a General Internal Medicine specialist who is passionate about health advocacy, education and cares deeply about the trainees and patients she is privileged to work with on the Clinical Teaching Unit at St. Paul’s Hospital. She is also an associate editor for the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Erica Battram, RN BA MHSM LSSBB is a Registered Nurse with a diverse background including emergency medicine, primary care, quality improvement, risk management and patient safety. She obtained her Master of Health service Management and specialized in quality, change management and process change. Erica has been involved in clinical research from multiple perspectives including academia, hospital, and patient care settings. She is a Lean Six Sigma Black belt certified and has worked in healthcare for over 3 decades. Erica advocates for the pivotal role of resilience in healthcare, emphasizing its significance in delivering high-value, effective, and patient-centered care. She is dedicated to assisting healthcare providers in designing, developing, implementing, and managing change initiatives with the goal of empowering impacted users and facilitating a successful transition from their current state to a more advanced future state.
